Lesson 2 - Genders in German

Goood mooorning everyone ;) 7:30 on the clock, still didn't get my coffee, but hey, "first things first" as the say :))
And of course, priority lead by purpose of teaching for now is to spread the useful knowledge of German language to all those who actually need it ;) So , without further ado -

Today, going through some basic questions and couple of basic words, we're gonna learn how 3 different genders appear in German and what are the typical things to remember when asking questions.

- Wo ist das Gepäck  ?  (where is the luggage ? )
- Ist es schon in Wien       (Is it already in Vienna ? )

- Ja, es ist schon in Wien.    (Yes, it is already in Vienna)

Vocabulary :

der Koffer, Koffer    -    suitcase, suitcases
der Koffer
die Tasche, Taschen   -    bag, bags
das Gepäck,   -    luggage, baggage  (no plural)

wo - where
ist - is
in  - in

ja - yes
nein - no
noch - still
schon - already

Berlin - Berlin
Zürich - Zurich
Wien - Vienna

The gremmatical gender

There are three genders in German.

masculine   der Koffer     (er)
feminine     die Tasche     (sie)
neuter        das Gespäck  (es)

Der, die and das in these  cases are definite articles. The gender of a noun is the same as gender of its article
Er, sie and es on the other hand are the third person singular of the personal pronnoun.

The personal pronoun has the same grammatical gender as the noun it is refering to.

Wo ist der Koffer ?               -      Er ist in Berlin.
Where is the suitcase?              -      It is in Berlin.
